ADVANCE Scholar Award Symposium: Celebrating the Outstanding Research and Contributions to Mentorship of Judy Callis, Gail Patricelli, and Tina Jeoh
Davis, CA

On January 13, 2016 UC Davis ADVANCE hosted the ADVANCE Scholar Award Symposium to celebrate the outstanding mentorship and research of ADVANCE Scholar awardees: Tina Jeoh, Associate Professor of Biological and Agricultural Engineering, Judy Callis, Professor of Molecular and Cellular Biology, and Gail Patricelli, Professor of Evolution and Ecology.

The ADVANCE Scholar Award is a prestigious award program and lecture series that encourages research leadership and outreach to underserved communities and/or mentorship of underrepresented students, and highlights and celebrates the contributions that women STEM faculty at the University of California, Davis have made to their respective fields.

Judy Callis is a Professor of Molecular and Cellular Biology at the University of California, Davis. She received her AB degree from Washington University at St. Louis MO, a MS degree from University of Illinois, Champagne-Urbana IL and a PhD from Stanford University, Stanford CA. She has a long-standing interest in how plants respond to and survive environmental stresses because the animal strategy of running away just doesn’t work for plants. Presentation by Judy Callis, "Cleaning House is One Way Plants Respond to Inside and Outside Changes"

Tina Jeoh is an Associate Professor in the Biological and Agricultural Engineering Department at the University of California, Davis.  She studies the science and engineering underlying the use of naturally occurring biopolymers as feedstock or raw material in various applications and her research addresses two global necessities – a sustainable and renewable energy supply and improvement in food quality and value. Presentation by Tina Jeoh, "Cellulosic Biofuels and Bioproducts: Overcoming Technical Challenges"

Gail Patricelli is a Professor in the Department of Evolution and Ecology at the University of California, Davis.  She received her BA from Whitman College and PhD from the University of Maryland, College Park, and was a postdoctoral researcher at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology.  Professor Patricelli and members of her lab study bioacoustics, breeding behaviors and the impacts of noise pollution on birds. Presentation by Gail Patricelli, "Robots, Telemetry and the Sex Lives of Wild Birds"
