On June 24, 2016, Dr. Jamison-McClung presented data on
diversity in STEM across the academic pipeline and elaborated on
emerging best practices to promote an inclusive STEM community.
She highlighted the cultural background and personal experiences
that led to her deep interest in civil rights and the need for
diversity.

January 30-31, 2016 at Stanley Hall at UC Berkeley. Registration
will open soon and will be available for Day 1, Day 2 or both Day

via a lightning talk and/or a poster.

Karen McDonald and Raymond Rodriguez presented on
“The Art and Craft of Team Science” at the inaugural UC Team
Science Retreat, at UC Santa Barbara on July 27, 2014.
Collaborative, interdisciplinary team science-based research has
become increasingly central in scientific discovery. Team science
garners more funding, and more impactful research and
publications. Having a strong network of collaborators and
mentors is critical to a productive and successful academic
career.
ADVANCE colleagues and other campus academic leadership
participated in the “Breaking Bad – Ways to Create a More
Inclusive Campus Culture”, also known as ”Fostering
Inclusive Excellence: Strategies & Tools for Department
Chairs and Deans” workshop on April 30, 2015. This unique
workshop explored strategies for building inclusive academic
environments and included research, data and an interactive
theatre performance that engages and stimulates critical
dialogue.
The UC Davis ADVANCE Center for the Advancement of Multicultural
Perspectives on Science (CAMPOS) Initiative hosted two Cafecitos
(coffee breaks) on February 26 and April 22, 2015.
Dr. Ruth Enid Zambrana gave an exciting seminar
on “Evidence-based Critical Interventions: Diversify Faculty and
Transform Higher Education,” on April 9, 2015, hosted by UC Davis
ADVANCE. Dr. Zambrana provided a summary of the overarching
research findings of a mixed methods study on URMs at
research-extensive universities and presented evidence-based
policies and practices to increase recruitment, retention and
tenure, and promotion of URM faculty.
DAVIS, CA – On April 17, 2015, Congressman John Garamendi
(D-Fairfield, CA) hosted the Advancing Women’s Careers and Dreams
Conference in Davis, bringing together experts and dozens of
accomplished women in business, non-profits, and public service.
Dr.
Karen Bales received the prestigious UC Davis
ADVANCE Scholar Award, for her outstanding research and
contributions to mentorship, on February 23, 2015. As part of the
ADVANCE Scholar Award Seminar and Networking Reception, Dr. Bales
gave an exciting lecture on “Oxytocin−Social Bonding, Autism, and
Women’s Health” to a well-attended audience of over 40
attendees.
Dr. Bales summarized results of studies on clinical and
pharmaceutical manipulations of oxytocin as well as
neuroanatomical studies. Dr. Bales also presented a series of
studies aimed at determining the long-term effects of
developmental exposure to intranasal oxytocin. It was concluded
that the effects of intranasal oxytocin may be long-lasting,
different by sex, may differ between rodent species and between
rodents and primates, and obstetric and other clinical uses of
oxytocin that may have long-lasting effects on offspring.
The Association for Women in Science (AWIS) is excited to
announce our participation in the United Nation’s inaugural World
Women’s Health and Development Forum. AWIS President Ann
Lee-Karlon, PhD, will address the UN Forum on Thursday,
February 12, 2015 at 11:40am ET (8:40am PT). The session
is titled “Empowering Women in Science and Economy” and Dr.
Lee-Karlon will discuss the many contributions of women in
science to global development, equal access for both educational
and employment opportunities in STEM, and the importance of paid
family leave policies.
Over the past few years a number of important reports on the
participation of women faculty in STEM have been published.
Results from many of these reports were presented at the UC Davis
ADVANCE Brown Bag series focused on “Women faculty in STEM —
Where do we stand?”
On October 7, 2014 Denneal Jamison-McClung
highlighted the status of women in STEM at the national and
internal levels.
On November 4, 2014 Kimberlee
Shauman highlighted the status of women in STEM at
nationally and at UC Davis, and interpreted data from
the COACHE Survey of Faculty Job Satisfaction Benchmark
Indicators.
ADVANCE hosted the Association for Women in Science (AWIS)
workshop, “Equitable Solutions for Retaining a Robust STEM
Workforce- Beyond Best Practices,” on November 5, 2014. Cynthia

and Dr. Yvonne W. Rodríguez, AWIS Phoebe S.
Six new faculty awarded as CAMPOS Faculty Scholars were
recognized at the CAMPOS Welcome Reception on November 13, 2014,
sponsored by UC Davis ADVANCE and hosted by Chancellor Linda
PB Katehi and Provost Ralph Hexter. The CAMPOS Faculty Scholars
were also recognized by the Offices of Senator Lois Wolk,
Assembleymember Mariko Yamada, and Consul General of Mexico
Carlos González Gutiérrez.
The UC Davis Welcome Reception for Women Faculty was sponsored by
UC Davis ADVANCE and the Office of the Vice Provost-Academic
Affairs, and was hosted by Chancellor Linda PB Katehi on October
23, 2014. It was well attended with over 80 faculty members,
and welcomed new faculty members, reconnected colleagues
from across campus.

(coffee breaks) on October 31, 2014 and December 12, 2014.
ADVANCE presented a workshop on “Securing
your first faculty position: Keys to successful
interviewing” at the Annual Society for Advancement
of Hispanics/Chicanos and Native Americans in
Science (SACNAS) National
Conference October 14-17, 2014 in Los Angeles, CA. The
workshop provided skill-building answers to key questions: What
does it take to make the “short list”? What are search-committees
looking for?
Biomedical Ph.D. Career Development Trends: Implications for
Workforce Development & Diversity

Recent biomedical workforce policy efforts have centered on the
twin challenges of enhancing career preparation for graduate
students and postdocs, and increasing diversity in the research
workforce & professoriate. Dr. Gibbs will discuss results of his
work that has focused on the graduate and postdoctoral training
experiences and career-decision making of recent Ph.D. graduates,
and whether/how these differ across lines of race/ethnicity and
gender.
Post-Ph.D. Career Pathways: From the Lab to Science Policy

This talk will explore the various options available for lab
scientists after Ph.D. completion. Dr. Gibbs will discuss his
time as an AAAS Science & Technology Policy Fellow at the
National Science Foundation, and his position as a Cancer
Prevention Fellow at the National Cancer Institute. Further, he
will share results from recent, national studies he’s conducted
examining the career development of recent biomedical science
Ph.D. graduates (see reference below).
The UC Davis ADVANCE Center for the Advancement of Multicultural
Perspectives on Science (CAMPOS) Initiative hosted a Cafecito
(coffee break) on May 16, 2014 to discuss 1) What makes
UCD attractive to Hispanic and Latina faculty? 2) How can we
improve the community and/or environment for Latina STEM faculty?
In March 2014, members of UC Davis ADVANCE leadership and
management teams, including Chancellor Katehi, Vice Provost
Academic Affairs Maureen Stanton, Vice Chancellor Student Affairs
Adela de la Torre, UC Davis ADVANCE Faculty Director Karen
McDonald, CAMPOS Director Mary Lou de Leon Siantz and Program
Coordinator Denneal Jamison-McClung, attended the NSF ADVANCE
Program Workshop hosted by the Association for Women in Science
(AWIS). UC Davis Provost Ralph Hexter joined
the leadership team in attendance.
Topics highlighted over the course of the 2.5-day workshop
focused on best practices for implementing NSF ADVANCE projects
and increasing diversity in STEM faculty. Challenges in
faculty recruitment, dual career hiring, service inequality,
mentoring, promotion and retention were discussed, as well as
strategies for implementing effective institutional policies and
practices to overcome current challenges.
This one-day system-wide Roundtable was co-sponsored by the
NSF-funded UCOP ADVANCE PAID and UC Davis ADVANCE programs.
It convened UC faculty and academic administrators from all 10 UC
campuses to examine the issue of the workplace climate and the
impact climate has on the recruitment, retention and success of
diverse faculty.
In October, 2013 the UC Davis ADVANCE Leadership team visited
University of Texas – Pan American (UTPA) to establish a
relationship between the two ADVANCE IT programs focused on
mutual interests to develop best STEM practices for Latina
faculty recruitment, retention and promotion.

by Kristi S. Anseth at 4 p.m. on Monday, May 5, in 1005
GBSF Auditorium, Genome Center, on the university campus. A
distinguished professor and Tisone Professor in the Department of
Chemical and Biological Engineering at the University of
Colorado, Boulder, Anseth, will speak on “Materials to Study Cell
Biology in the Fourth Dimension.” The event is presented as a
College of Engineering Distinguished Lecture.

has partnered with The Scientista Foundation and LabX Media to
conduct a series of six interviews with influential North
American scientists to highlight their achievements and
contributions, and to ask them what advice they have for the next
generation of scientific pioneers.
A Town Hall Meeting will be held at the Cancer Center Auditorium
at the UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento, CA on April 14,
